₹19,000-Crore Infusion Bolsters Indian Navy’s Maritime Capabilities

In a landmark development, the Ministry of Defence has forged an agreement with Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam to secure five fleet support ships (FSS) for the Indian Navy, amounting to a combined investment of around ₹19,000 crore.

This strategic move amplifies India’s drive towards self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing, as the vessels are set to be crafted indigenously by HSL. The Cabinet Committee on Security greenlighted this acquisition during a consequential meeting in August 2023.

The envisioned fleet support ships will fulfill a pivotal role in replenishing naval vessels at sea, ensuring a seamless supply of fuel, water, ammunition, and provisions. This transformative addition to the Indian Naval Fleet will substantially extend its operational endurance, enabling extended maritime operations devoid of frequent returns to harbor.

These vessels stand poised to enhance the Indian Navy’s expeditionary capabilities, empowering it to navigate blue waters with increased efficiency. Beyond their core operational function, the FSS can be swiftly deployed for humanitarian tasks such as evacuation and disaster relief operations.

At a remarkable 44,000 tonnes, the Fleet Support Ships will proudly mark the maiden endeavor of their kind to be constructed in India by an indigenous shipyard. The ambitious project is anticipated to generate employment opportunities amounting to a staggering 16.88 million man-days across an eight-year span.

The launch of this shipbuilding endeavor is set to breathe fresh vitality into the Indian shipbuilding landscape and invigorate the ancillary industries, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
