Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been formally indicted for the alleged leaking of classified documents, according to a prosecutor’s statement on Monday. Khan, who is currently in custody at Adiala Jail, has faced over 150 legal cases since his removal from office in April of the previous year. He contends that these cases are politically motivated.

In the latest development, Imran Khan’s legal representatives have expressed their intention to submit an appeal promptly.

The former cricketer-turned-politician received a conviction related to accusations of unlawfully selling state gifts acquired by him and his family during his tenure as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022. He was handed a five-year ban from engaging in politics, effectively disqualifying him from participating in any upcoming elections.

Notably, the Islamabad High Court recently suspended Khan’s conviction and three-year prison sentence in the Toshakhana corruption case, in which he was found guilty of illegally selling state gifts. This legal battle had also resulted in his disqualification from politics for five years.

The Toshakhana case, filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), alleged that Khan “deliberately concealed” details of gifts he retained from the Toshakhana, a repository for gifts offered to government officials during foreign visits.

These events mark a pivotal moment in the legal and political journey of the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan.
