In a recent address at the Voice of Global South summit, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav emphasized India’s exemplary commitment to the Paris Agreement’s objective of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Minister Yadav highlighted India’s low per capita greenhouse gas emissions, currently less than one-third of the global average, contrasting with developed nations yet to fulfill their climate finance pledges for supporting developing countries in combating climate change. India, having contributed only 4% of global carbon emissions from 1850 to 2019 despite a 17% world population share, stands as one of the few major economies making significant strides toward meeting its climate goals. The minister urged developed nations to uphold their commitment to mobilizing $100 billion annually by 2020 for climate finance, underscoring India’s progress in surpassing its nationally determined contributions (NDC) by generating 44% of its electricity from non-fossil fuel sources. Furthermore, India’s green credit program, encouraging environmental initiatives, exemplifies the nation’s dedication to sustainable practices.
