Mumbai:Renowned investor Warren Buffet’s firm, Berkshire Hathaway, has decided to divest its entire stake in Paytm, incurring a loss exceeding ₹620 crores. The move comes as a significant development in the financial landscape, impacting both the global investment community and India’s burgeoning fintech sector.

The shares were sold at an average price of ₹877.29 apiece, resulting in a transaction value of ₹1,370.63 crores. The sale reflects a substantial financial setback for Berkshire Hathaway, emphasizing the challenges faced in the rapidly evolving digital payment landscape.

Following BH International Holdings’ exit, shares of One97 Communications experienced a 3% decline, closing at ₹895 apiece. The market’s reaction underscores the influence of major investors on the valuation and sentiment surrounding fintech companies.

Copthall Mauritius Investment and Ghisallo Master Fund acquired the offloaded shares, purchasing 1.19% and 0.67% stake, respectively. This transition in ownership marks a strategic realignment within Paytm’s shareholder structure.

Paytm reported a consolidated loss reduction to ₹291.7 crores in the second quarter of the current fiscal year, compared to ₹571.5 crores in the same period last year. The company’s consolidated revenue from operations increased by about 32% to ₹2,518.6 crores during the quarter.

Paytm has faced challenges in response to regulatory changes, notably with the Reserve Bank of India’s directive to banks and shadow banks to maintain higher capital buffers.

Berkshire Hathaway’s exit from Paytm highlights the dynamic nature of the fintech sector and the impact of regulatory shifts on investor decisions. The transaction’s ripple effect on market dynamics emphasizes the need for industry players to navigate evolving regulatory landscapes strategically.
