Bihar is experiencing intense cold weather, with temperatures dropping below 5 degrees in several districts. Between January 25 and 27, there are forecasts for snowfall and rain in the Western Himalayas, indicating a direct impact on Bihar’s weather. This weather event, attributed to a new western disturbance, is expected to usher in a new wave of bone-chilling cold in the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of severe cold conditions in Bihar from January 25 to 29.

IMD Issues Cold Day/Severe Cold Day Alert for Bihar

IMD Patna has issued a Cold Day/Severe Cold Day alert for Bihar, cautioning the public to take precautions against the impending cold wave. The severe cold conditions are expected to prevail throughout the state during this period. The IMD advises special care for children and the elderly. According to official reports from IMD, Bihar has been witnessing consecutive cold days since January 12, primarily due to the influence of frigid winds from the lower latitudes and the north-east.

Cold Day Conditions in Over 12 Districts

On Wednesday, severe cold day conditions were observed in many places across the state. Patna, Muzaffarpur, Dehri, Gopalganj, Kaimur, Buxar, Kishanganj, Purnia/Samastipur, Jehanabad/Siwan, Pupri/Sitamarhi, and Vaishali reported severe cold day conditions. Additionally, more than 12 districts experienced cold day conditions. The maximum temperatures remained four degrees Celsius below normal. The state’s minimum temperatures ranged from six to nine degrees Celsius below normal.

Continued Cold Wave Till January 29

Dr. Sunil Kumar, Nodal Officer for Agricultural Meteorological Services at BAU Sabour, revealed that Bihar is likely to experience severe or cold day conditions until January 29. During the next five days, some places may witness dense fog. Intermittent sunshine is expected afterward. On January 26 and 27, conditions resembling a cold wave are anticipated. The chilling impact of Shitalahar (cold wave) has been felt since January 12. The upcoming western disturbance on January 26 and 27 is expected to affect the western Himalayan region.

Disruption in Air and Train Services

Due to the fog, train and air services in Bihar are facing disruptions. The first flight from Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna began at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, with the first landing occurring at 11:35 AM. However, three IndiGo flights were canceled due to poor visibility and unfavorable weather conditions. These flights included routes from Hyderabad, Devghar, and Ranchi. Visibility at Patna Meteorological Center improved to more than a thousand meters after 11:30 AM on Wednesday, allowing for the potential resumption of flight arrivals and departures.
