Storms wreak havoc in Bihar amidst sweltering heat, hailstorm adds to woes

Bihar is reeling under intense heatwave conditions, making it difficult for people to venture out of their homes. On Tuesday evening, amidst the scorching heat, several districts in the state including Nawada, Jehanabad, Gaya, Kaimur, Rohtas, and Aurangabad experienced rainfall, bringing relief to the residents. However, Aurangabad faced the brunt of the storm and rainfall. A brief but intense storm wreaked havoc from the city to the villages. Along with the heavy winds and rainfall, hailstones also fell, causing significant damage across the towns and villages. The 20-minute storm inflicted substantial losses in both urban and rural areas, with property damage amounting to lakhs of rupees.

In Aurangabad, trees were uprooted, and the BSNL network was disrupted. Trees were uprooted on the roads near the Aurangabad district headquarters. Even near the DM and MP’s residences, trees were uprooted. In places like Dany Bigaha and the farm area, among others, trees were also uprooted. Additionally, several asbestos roofs of houses were blown away. Fortunately, some people narrowly escaped the impact.

In urban areas, the storm has caused significant damage. Areas like Biratpur, Tikari Mohalla, Shahpur, Kshatriyanagar, among others, were severely affected. At Punjab National Bank premises in Ratnua, a staff member’s parked car was struck by a fallen electric pole, damaging the car. Moreover, in some villages of Sadar and Madanpur blocks, the maize, planted to secure vegetable crops, was also destroyed.

In Sasaram, there was light rain in the late evening, bringing some relief to the residents. However, after the rain, the hailstorm caused further distress. In many areas of the district, accompanied by strong winds, there was hail, damaging mango trees. The daytime temperature reached up to 41 degrees Celsius, with a direct decrease of about four degrees Celsius.

Temperature Conditions on Tuesday

On Tuesday, the highest temperature in almost thirty districts of the state was 40 degrees Celsius or higher. The highest temperature in the state was recorded in Sheikhpura at 42.3 degrees Celsius. Additionally, Patna recorded 40.7, Gaya 41.2, Bhagalpur, West Champaran, and Purnia 40.2 degrees Celsius, Saran and Bhojpur 41.2, Darbhanga and Begusarai 40, Supaul 40.6, Madhubani 40.3, East Champaran 40.5, Khagaria and Jamui 41.5, Aurangabad 41.6, Banka and Nawada 41.1, Nalanda 40.5, Siwan 40.4, Saharsa 40.5, and Madhepura 40.4 degrees Celsius. In around eight districts of the state, the temperature was recorded between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius. The state’s highest temperature on Tuesday was above 40 degrees Celsius.
