President Biden’s historic show of solidarity with United Auto Workers (UAW) members on a picket line outside a Michigan car plant marked a significant moment in US labor history. As the first sitting president to grace a picket line with his presence, Biden arrived in Michigan aboard Air Force One, where he was warmly received by UAW President Shawn Fain. The two leaders shared a ride to the picket line, setting the tone for the day.

Addressing the crowd through a bullhorn, President Biden acknowledged the pivotal role UAW played in rescuing the automobile industry during the 2008 crisis, emphasizing the sacrifices made by the workers. With the car companies now thriving, Biden championed the cause of the UAW members, urging that they “deserve a significant raise and other benefits” and asserting, “Let’s get back what we lost.”

The backdrop for Biden’s visit was an escalating dispute between the UAW and America’s three largest carmakers – Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis. The strike, which had entered its 12th day, commenced on September 15. President Biden expressed his support for the striking workers and initially planned to send his labor secretary, Julie Su, and senior White House adviser Gene Sperling to aid in negotiations.

Notably, the visit also comes on the eve of former President Donald Trump’s expected appearance in Detroit. Trump, who secured significant union support in his 2016 election victory but lost it in 2020 to Biden, is making a bid to regain that support. However, unlike Biden, he is not anticipated to visit a picket line.

While the UAW has not yet endorsed President Biden, its leadership has been critical of Trump’s efforts to court union members. Trump’s opposition to Biden’s environmental policies, particularly the push for American carmakers to transition to electric vehicles, has drawn criticism from both sides.

The visit elicited mixed reactions from UAW members. Some welcomed Biden’s support and expressed hope that he would take concrete actions to assist working people upon returning to Washington. Others stressed that Biden’s endorsement would require meaningful steps in support of their cause.

In conclusion, President Biden’s unprecedented presence on the UAW picket line symbolizes his commitment to labor unions and sets the stage for a critical showdown in Detroit, as both he and his potential opponent, Donald Trump, vie for the support of American workers.
