In a pioneering pursuit of scientific advancement, the United Kingdom has undertaken the momentous task of constructing the globe’s most formidable laser, with an irradiance touted to surpass a staggering “million, billion, billion” times that of our radiant sun, as reported by The Times. Markedly, the United Kingdom’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) has been granted a substantial funding allocation of £85 million to elevate its Vulcan system to the pinnacle of laser supremacy worldwide.
The groundbreaking creation, christened the Vulcan 20-20, is currently under construction at the prestigious Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Central Laser Facility (CLF) located in the hallowed precincts of Oxfordshire. This ambitious endeavor promises to herald a transformative era in scientific inquiry, offering potential breakthroughs in domains as diverse as renewable energy and revolutionary cancer treatments.
The appellation “Vulcan 20-20” finds its genesis in the laser’s unparalleled capabilities, boasting a primary laser beam with an astonishing energy output of 20 Petawatts (PW), in conjunction with eight high-energy beams capable of yielding up to 20 Kilojoules (KJ).
“This stupendous twenty-fold augmentation in power is destined to solidify its status as the most potent laser on the planet. A single pulse emanating from this prodigious laser shall bestow more power than the entire National Grid,” affirmed the funding entity, UK Research and Innovation.
Presently, the preeminent laser within CLF’s arsenal is the Vulcan laser, celebrated for its diverse utility, particularly within the realm of plasma physics. However, the impending Vulcan laser will eclipse its predecessor by an awe-inspiring factor of 100, transcending even the resplendence of the sun-drenched Sahara Desert.

Mr. Freeman further added, “By investing £85 million to give our research community the edge in leading crucial scientific discoveries, we are also delivering hundreds of highly skilled jobs in science and engineering that boost the UK science sector and grow our economy.”
Professor John Collier, Director of CLF, remarked, “Vulcan has been the flagship laser at CLF for many years and is widely recognized internationally as a pioneering facility. Over the past 40 years, it has made important contributions to plasma physics research, and hundreds of PhD students have been trained at the facility. It is timely for Vulcan to undergo its next major upgrade, making it ready to serve a new generation of scientists, ensuring the UK retains its leadership role in this field.”
