Former US President Donald Trump is set to appear in a New York court today as a civil fraud trial begins, posing a significant threat to his business empire as he pursues a return to the White House. The trial, presided over by Judge Arthur Engoron, has already ruled that Trump and his sons, Eric and Don Jr, engaged in fraudulent practices by inflating the value of the Trump Organization’s real estate and financial assets over an extended period. New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking $250 million in penalties and the removal of Trump and his sons from the management of the family’s business.

In addition to this civil case, Trump faces multiple impending criminal proceedings, including charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and criminal hush money charges in New York. He is also accused of mishandling classified documents in a Florida federal court. Furthermore, Trump must respond to state charges in Georgia, where prosecutors allege he attempted to manipulate the state’s 2020 election results.

Judge Engoron’s ruling in the New York civil case led to the revocation of business licenses for some of the Trump Organization’s New York properties. Enforcing such penalties could have a substantial impact on Trump’s business operations in the state, potentially jeopardizing control over flagship properties like Trump Tower in Manhattan.

The trial is expected to involve numerous high-profile witnesses, including Trump himself, former Trump Organization financial director Allen Weisselberg, Trump’s children Eric and Don Jr, and his former lawyer Michael Cohen. Trump has repeatedly dismissed the allegations, calling New York Attorney General Letitia James “racist” and Judge Arthur Engoron “deranged.”
