Darbhanga: In a startling development in Mirgayas Chak, Darbhanga, allegations have surfaced against the land mafia for the unauthorized sale of the grounds of Man Pokhar and Koila Man Pokhar. Despite being registered in government records, these lakes have reportedly fallen prey to illegal transactions. The sprawling Man Pokhar, once a source of tranquility for locals, has now become a battleground between the “Save the Lake” campaign and land mafias.

Covering an expanse of 65 acres, Man Pokhar, historically fed by a branch of the Bagmati River, is now facing exploitation by the land mafia. Local residents, referring to it by three names – Man Pokhar, Dhobiya Pokhar, and Koila Man Pokhar – have seen the water quality deteriorate over time. Despite its governmental status, this lake is allegedly being filled and sold off by the land mafia.

Members of the “Save the Lake” campaign raised concerns with the district magistrate, citing the illegal sale of the lake. In a disturbing turn of events, these activists were subjected to physical assault by criminals just 48 hours after filing the complaint.

The lakeside area, once a haven for locals seeking respite from the summer heat, has now transformed into a concrete jungle, with large buildings standing on what was once the pristine Man Pokhar.

Campaign members, who have been attempting to raise awareness and seek intervention from the authorities, have faced roadblocks. Despite contacting officials in Sadar and Bahadurpur regions, no concrete action has been taken so far.

Reacting to the assault on the campaign members, Darbhanga’s Sadar Additional Superintendent of Police, Amit Kumar, assured that immediate action is being taken against the attackers. The confiscated bike used in the assault is being traced for further investigation.

Speaking on the broader issue of land encroachment, Darbhanga District Magistrate Rajiv Roshan emphasized the state government’s commitment to the “Jal Jeevan Hariyali Abhiyan.” He reiterated that any encroachment on public lakes and ponds would be dealt with under the Public Land Encroachment Act.

As the authorities address the immediate concerns of the “Save the Lake” campaign, the incident highlights the ongoing battle against land mafias and the importance of preserving natural water resources in Bihar.
