In a noteworthy address at an electric vehicles conclave, Argentina’s Ambassador, Hugo Javier Gobbi, extended a cordial invitation to Indian enterprises, proposing a strategic shift in their lithium procurement practices. Gobbi urged Indian companies to consider sourcing lithium directly from Argentina, rather than relying on China, which currently stands as India’s primary lithium supplier.

Hugo Javier Gobbi, the Ambassador of Argentina, has called upon Indian corporate entities to contemplate a significant shift in their lithium procurement strategy. Speaking at an electric vehicles conclave, Ambassador Gobbi recommended that Indian companies explore the prospect of importing lithium directly from Argentina, thereby decreasing their reliance on China, presently the primary source of lithium for India.

Gobbi highlighted the harmonious synergy between India and Argentina concerning critical minerals such as lithium and copper, which are indispensable for electric vehicles and sustainable energy solutions. Given India’s burgeoning demand for these metals and Argentina’s abundant reserves, Ambassador Gobbi reiterated the potential advantages of establishing a direct lithium trade route between the two Nations.

Devansh Jain, Chair of the Renewable Energy Committee at PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), underscored the compelling need for India’s transition to electric mobility. He emphasized that this shift is not merely a choice but an imperative for the nation’s sustainable future. Jain articulated the pivotal role electric vehicles play in mitigating carbon emissions, improving air quality, and enhancing energy efficiency.

Ayush Lohia, CEO of Lohia Auto Industries, expressed his optimism for the electric vehicle sector in India. He envisaged an impending electric vehicle revolution and underscored the importance of skill development, particularly in electromechanical engineering, research and development, and customer service, to facilitate this transformation.

Deb Mukherjee, CEO of Omega Seiki Mobility, regarded the electric vehicle revolution as a significant opportunity for India, particularly for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). He proposed that India should focus on domestic manufacturing of electric vehicle components, powertrains, and batteries.

India’s proactive stance in securing its mineral supplies was noted. The country, in June 2023, became the first major developing nation to enter into a mineral security partnership, aiming to establish a resilient supply chain for critical minerals. Additionally, India and Australia inked the Critical Minerals Investment Partnership, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey toward bolstering investment in critical minerals and establishing robust supply chains between the two nations.

Ambassador Gobbi’s appeal to diversify lithium sourcing aligns with India’s efforts to ensure a stable and sustainable supply of critical minerals, a fundamental requirement for the burgeoning electric vehicle industry and sustainable energy solutions.
