Patna, In an unscheduled morning inspection, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar conducted a surprise tour of the main state secretariat on Friday, underscoring his administration’s continuing emphasis on bureaucratic discipline, visitor amenities, and workplace hygiene.
Accompanied by senior officials including Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Deepak Kumar, and Development Commissioner S. Siddharth, Mr Kumar visited several key sections, including the Chief Secretary’s wing, the Cabinet room, the Finance Minister’s office, and various guest suites.
During the hour-long review, the Chief Minister instructed officers to ensure punctuality, maintain strict discipline, and execute duties with greater sensitivity and efficiency so that pending files and public grievances are cleared without delay.
Particular attention was paid to the experience of visitors. Mr Kumar directed officials to improve seating arrangements and general facilities for citizens who arrive at the secretariat, stressing that the complex should reflect an orderly and welcoming environment.
He also emphasised rigorous cleanliness standards across the premises, calling for regular maintenance of gardens and additional plantation wherever required to keep the campus verdant and aesthetically appealing.
“Everyone must reach office on time and work with full commitment,” Mr Kumar reportedly told the assembled officers, adding that the secretariat should serve as a model of administrative efficiency and civic upkeep.
The visit comes amid the Chief Minister’s periodic efforts to keep the state bureaucracy on its toes, a practice he has followed across multiple terms in office. Officials present described the tone as firm but constructive, with immediate directions issued to the General Administration Department to prepare a detailed action plan for upgrading facilities.
No official statement was released following the inspection, but sources within the secretariat indicated that a follow-up review is likely in the coming weeks to monitor compliance.
The surprise visit reinforces Mr Kumar’s reputation for hands-on governance and administrative micro-management, traits that have defined much of his long tenure as Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Minister.
