After a five-year delay, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated the extension of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) bridge to Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg.

Dhanaji Herlekar, assistant commissioner, L ward, confirmed the demolition and relocation of five commercial structures at the LBS junction to the Kurla municipal market. The move is part of a project aimed at enhancing north-south vehicular connectivity.

Under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)’s SCLR project, BMC is undertaking work on one lane of LBS Marg. Herlekar explained that the structures, hindering the SCLR bridge to LBS Marg, were removed to commence work on pillars. The BMC took over the pending work from MMRDA and provided rehabilitation in Kurla’s municipal market along with monetary compensation.

“This crucial connector for commuters from Ghatkopar to the airport will alleviate traffic jams at LBS Marg,” stated Herlekar. The extension addresses the gap between the SCLR connector from Bandra Kurla Complex to Kalina junction and the LBS road flyover.

The completed project is expected to facilitate smoother travel from Santacruz to Ghatkopar, bypassing three signals and reducing travel time. With a total project cost of ₹36.28 crore, it is anticipated to be completed in 24 months, excluding the monsoon period.
