In a strategic move, the expansive network of foundations initiated by the eminent philanthropist George Soros, boasting a substantial endowment of $25 billion, is orchestrating the closure of offices across the globe. This substantial undertaking will result in a significant reduction, exceeding 40 percent, in its workforce.

Recently, staff members of the Open Society Foundations’ Africa branch were apprised of the forthcoming changes. The transformation plan involves the shuttering of numerous offices, including half a dozen in Africa, alongside locations in Baltimore and Barcelona, as conveyed in correspondence shared among personnel.

“As the board resolved in June to effectuate a staff reduction of more than 40 percent, it has become an imperative for our staffing dimensions and global presence to undergo substantial contraction,” asserted Binaifer Nowrojee, Vice President of Programs at OSF.

This philanthropic endeavor annually disburses over $1 billion in grants, a noteworthy portion of which, exceeding $100 million, is allocated to initiatives in Africa.
