In a recent all-hands meeting at Google, CEO Sundar Pichai addressed concerns raised by employees regarding the unprecedented layoff of 12,000 staff members that occurred a year ago. The decision, acknowledged as the largest layoff in the company’s history, was explained by Pichai as a difficult yet necessary step for Google’s growth.

During the meeting, an employee inquired about the impact of the layoff on the company’s growth, profit and loss, and employee morale. Pichai, in response, acknowledged a significant impact on employee morale and described the decision as one of the most challenging in the company’s 25-year history.

“At Google, we really haven’t had a moment quite like that in 25 years,” said Pichai, emphasizing the gravity of the decision. He defended the move as “difficult but necessary,” stating that not making those job cuts last year would have led to worse consequences down the line, creating a major burden on the company.

While justifying the decision, Pichai also admitted that the process of immediately cutting off access for all laid-off personnel and informing them simultaneously, regardless of time zones, was not the right approach. He acknowledged that it could have been handled differently.

The Google CEO explained that the decision to lay off employees was made to avoid a long-term negative impact on the company. He highlighted the need for the company to invest in various areas and adapt to significant shifts in the world, indicating that the decision, though challenging, was essential for Google’s ongoing success.
