Former Twitter Head of Trust and Safety, Ella Irwin, tendered her resignation from the social media giant in June of this year. In a recent interview with NBC News, Irwin candidly described her tenure under the new helmsman, Elon Musk, as “the most challenging experience” in her professional journey.

Irwin articulated, “It unquestionably constituted the most arduous chapter in my career.” Her decision to step down was prompted by Elon Musk’s public criticism of moderation actions taken by the company, particularly concerning issues of misgendering.

Irwin expounded that her departure stemmed from the realization that there was a profound misalignment between her unwavering principles and the company’s evolving ethos. She expounded, “One fundamental disjunction was between the concepts of freedom of speech and freedom of reach. It was imperative to me that there existed a lucid understanding that content promoting hate speech or graphic violence should not be accorded promotion, advertisement, or amplification.”

Another pivotal factor she cited for her resignation was her belief in granting individuals the autonomy to make choices that resonate with them, in terms of whom they follow and the content they opt to engage with. In her words, “Individuals should be empowered to chart their own path, choosing their own narrative.”

Irwin, while acknowledging her confidentiality obligations to the company, expressed her intent to leverage her podcast as a platform to delve into the professional and personal lessons gleaned from her tenure at Twitter. She also noted that Elon Musk brought a distinct “startup energy” to Twitter, with a fervor to enact swift, transformative changes, including a significant downsizing of the workforce. She observed, “I don’t believe I’ve ever witnessed such a rapid transformation in a company.”

Irwin, who assumed her role at Twitter in June 2022, took the helm of the Trust and Safety team in November when her predecessor, Yoel Roth, stepped down. Her purview encompassed content moderation.

The former executive commented that Elon Musk exhibited moments of impulsivity but underscored that she learned significantly from his approach during her brief tenure. She elaborated, “His decisions are often underscored by a surprising depth of emotion, which can contribute to the perception of impulsiveness. Elon possesses a remarkable ability to scrutinize established norms, eliminate constraints, and distill challenges to their core principles. This approach is particularly potent when swift change is imperative.”

At present, Ella Irwin is savoring a hiatus from professional engagements. When questioned about a potential return to Twitter, she responded, “Never say never, right? However, it would necessitate a substantial realignment of circumstances. Companies evolve, leadership dynamics shift, numerous variables come into play, but the likelihood of an imminent return remains uncertain.”
