In an unfolding diplomatic development, Canada has affirmed its participation in the forthcoming G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20), slated to convene in the vibrant capital city of Delhi from October 12th to October 14th, 2023. This noteworthy decision by Canada assumes significance amidst the backdrop of strained bilateral relations between New Delhi and Ottawa, sparked by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations regarding India’s alleged involvement in the demise of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

As per the official communiqué issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat, it has come to light that both Germany and Argentina will, regrettably, be absent from this eminent gathering, citing “internal reasons” as the cause.

Addressing members of the media, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla made an illuminating statement, “Every nation has been extended a cordial invitation, and we have received a resolute confirmation from Canada’s Senate Speaker for their attendance. This august event will host a distinguished assembly, comprising 50 Members of Parliament, 14 General Secretaries, as well as 26 Presidents and 10 Vice-Presidents. Notably, this edition of the P20 event will witness the maiden participation of the President of the Pan African Parliament.”

Birla elucidated that the central theme of the P20 gathering is aptly titled ‘India as the Cradle of Democracy.’ During the course of this gathering, participants will engage in thoughtful deliberations, both formal and informal, encompassing a wide array of topics pertinent to global stakeholders.

The P20, an august assembly, comprises Speakers and Presidents of Parliaments from G20 nations, thus providing an invaluable platform for parliamentary leaders to congregate and share insights and best practices concerning matters of global import.

The upcoming two-day affair, set to be inaugurated by the esteemed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 13th, is poised to feature four substantive sessions. These sessions will be dedicated to the deliberation of critical issues including the transformative potential of public digital platforms in shaping human lives, initiatives for women-led development, expediting the achievement of sustainable development goals, and the transition towards sustainable energy sources.

Furthermore, the Lok Sabha secretariat has divulged that an engaging pre-summit event, the Parliamentary Forum on LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), is scheduled to transpire on October 12th.
