New Delhi, The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern during its weekly media briefing over reports of members of the Indian community receiving extortion calls from gangsters in Canada. Randhir Jaiswal, MEA spokesperson, addressed the issue, emphasizing that such threats, especially towards Indian nationals, are a matter of serious concern.
Jaiswal outlined various matters slated for discussions between India and Canada, citing an incident involving an attacked temple. The Canadian police subsequently investigated the temple premises, revealing that the intruder had a mental health condition. These incidents add to the ongoing complexities in India-Canada relations.
The MEA spokesperson responded to queries regarding Indian-Canadian community members facing extortion and threat calls over the last two months. Law enforcement in Canada has initiated a task force to investigate these reports, with the Canadian police currently looking into nine such incidents.
Tensions between India and Canada have escalated in recent months, fueled by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of New Delhi’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. India dismissed these claims as absurd and accused Canada of providing space to extremists, terrorists, and anti-India elements.
