Malé: Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, on his inaugural state visit to China, commended Beijing as a “valued ally and integral collaborator” of the Indian Ocean island nation, expressing appreciation for the robust cooperation between the two countries.
Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, engaged with provincial officials in Fujian during the initial day of his five-day visit. This followed the dismissal of three ministers in the Maldives for derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sparking a diplomatic row with India. Indians constitute the largest tourist group in the tourism-dependent Maldives.
While China is yet to disclose the official itinerary, Muizzu is expected to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and sign multiple agreements. During a meeting with officials from China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC), which has undertaken projects in the Maldives, Muizzu emphasized China’s significance as a valued ally and integral collaborator in the developmental journey of the Maldives, according to a press release from his office in Malé.
Muizzu expressed aspirations to elevate bilateral relations to new heights and increase collaborative efforts in various mutual interest areas. Later, he met Zhou Zuyi, Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China, Fujian Provincial Party unit. Muizzu emphasized the Maldives’ appreciation for the China-Maldives relationship, expressing hopes to enhance cooperation in multiple areas.
Despite a diplomatic row triggered by derogatory remarks against PM Modi, Muizzu’s visit aims to strengthen ties between the Maldives and China. The visit includes official talks and the signing of key agreements to enhance trade, professional development, and socioeconomic cooperation. It is expected to pave the way for collaborations in technology and other areas.
Muizzu’s foreign policy seems to be evolving, as indicated by his visit to Turkiye and the UAE before China, breaking with the tradition of his predecessors. The Maldives, India’s key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region, plays a vital role in India’s strategic initiatives.
