In an incident that has captured the attention of Delhi University’s academic circles, a viral video has surfaced depicting a heated altercation between two female students over their favored presidential candidates in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections. This incident unfolded at Moti Lal Nehru College, adding an unusual twist to the already intriguing DUSU elections held on September 22 after a four-year hiatus.
The video, which was initially shared on an undisclosed platform, has garnered an impressive 116.7K views, underscoring the gravity of the incident.
The video footage captures the intense confrontation between the two students, who physically engage in a confrontation while a shocked crowd looks on. It is reported that the dispute erupted when these two young women, affiliated with different student political parties, found themselves in a heated argument over the suitability of their respective party’s presidential candidate for the role of DUSU president.
The root cause of this clash stems from the candidates themselves: Hitesh Gulia and Tushar Dedha, who were running for the position of DUSU president.
A student from Motilal Nehru College, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed, “A group of girls began discussing which presidential candidate, ABVP’s or NSUI’s, was more attractive. I was present when the altercation broke out, and I was genuinely taken aback to witness such an escalation on campus. A debate over a male candidate’s appearance escalated to such an extent that the two girls physically assaulted each other. It’s now a well-known fact in my college circles that both of them harbored crushes on the presidential candidates, Tushar Dedha and Hitesh Gulia. While the DUSU election results have been declared, the pressing question of which of the two candidates is more attractive remains unanswered as their ongoing conflict continues.”
Sanyam Yadav, a first-year student pursuing a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics at Ramjas College, expressed his dismay, saying, “The DUSU campaigning had already generated a great deal of violence, with even students supporting contesting candidates turning against each other. I’m uncertain about the source of the viral video, but it casts a negative light on DU. While having opinions and crushes is natural, resorting to physical violence to prove one’s point crosses a significant ethical boundary.”
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the passionate and sometimes volatile nature of student politics on university campuses.
