Bihar’s Education Minister Chandrashekhar has courted controversy with his measured response to the tragic demise of sub-inspector Prabhat Ranjan, who fell victim to an incident involving sand mafias in Jamui district. Chandrashekhar’s assertion that such occurrences are not unique and have transpired in other states has elicited censure. While touring Sitamarhi, the minister underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to countering criminal activities and upholding law and order, ensuring swift retribution within 24 to 48 hours of such incidents. However, critics, including RLSP (R) chief Chirag Paswan, have cast doubt on the efficacy of the state’s law enforcement, particularly regarding the protection afforded to sand mafias. BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain, echoing concerns, criticized the state government, characterizing the prevailing situation as the “rule of Sand Mafias,” urging both the government and the Director General of Police (DGP) to bolster the morale of law enforcement and take resolute action against the sand mafias. The unfortunate episode has reignited conversations regarding the pervasive issue of illicit sand mining, extending its influence across various districts in Bihar.
