Former Pakistan cricket captain Rashid Latif criticizes the detrimental impact of political interference on Pakistan’s cricketing prospects, citing the loss of the T20 World Cup last year and the struggle of players to adapt to different formats.
In the past year, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has seen three different chairpersons, creating instability. A revolving door of five selectors, including names like Mohammad Wasim, Micky Arthur, and Shahid Afridi, has further complicated matters.
Latif highlights the lack of vision among selectors, as new players like Saud Shakeel, Abdullah Shafiqe, and Hasan Ali were suddenly included in the ODI World Cup team. Established players like Fakhar Zaman were dropped, and the team seemed to follow an outdated ODI strategy.
The cricketing legend emphasizes the need for modernization and specialists in the team, noting the absence of an “X factor” in the playing XI. He asserts that player selection lacks merit.
Latif also addresses the physical and mental fitness of players. He criticizes the handling of injuries, such as Naseem Shah’s shoulder issue and Shaheen Shah Afridi’s fatigue. He stresses the importance of players being fully fit.
Regarding the recent India-Pakistan match, Latif comments on how Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan struggled against spinners Kuldeep and Jadeja. He disapproves of their sweeping technique and suggests using footwork against spin.
Latif concludes by mentioning the potential of Pakistan’s cricket team but warns that administrative instability will hinder their progress. He believes consistent leadership is vital for the team’s success.
