New Delhi, In a significant development, a local court has given the nod to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament, Sanjay Singh, who is currently under arrest in connection with a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi excise scam. The court has granted him permission to sign forms and documents necessary for his Rajya Sabha renomination.

Special Judge M K Nagpal approved Singh’s request after he filed an application stating that his current term as a Rajya Sabha member is set to conclude on January 27. The Returning Officer issued a notice on January 2 for the upcoming election and nominations, with a submission deadline of January 9.

Singh’s application sought permission from the Tihar Jail Superintendent to allow him to sign the required documents. The court order, issued on Thursday, directed the jail superintendent to permit Singh’s counsel to present the documents to the jail authorities on January 6, 2024. It further instructed the superintendent to ensure that Singh’s signatures are obtained on the said documents.

Quoting the judge’s order, “It is being directed that if the documents are presented by the counsel for the accused before jail authorities on January 6, 2024, the jail superintendent shall ensure that the signatures of the accused are permitted to be taken on said documents, and he is also permitted to meet his counsel for half-an-hour to discuss the modalities in connection with filing of the said nomination.”

Sanjay Singh, arrested by the anti-money laundering agency on October 4, faces allegations from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of playing a significant role in the formulation and implementation of the excise policy, which has since been scrapped. The ED claims that Singh benefited certain liquor manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers in exchange for financial gains. Singh has consistently denied these allegations.

This court order comes as Singh gears up for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election, seeking to secure his renomination. With the granted permission, Singh will now be able to sign the necessary documents and consult with his counsel regarding the nomination process.
