New Delhi, Delhi experienced its coldest morning this season with the minimum temperature dropping to 4.9 degrees Celsius, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Safdarjung observatory in the national capital recorded this chilling temperature, while other areas like Lodhi Road and Ayanagar reported 5 and 6 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Hisar in Haryana claimed the title of the coldest place on the plains of India, registering a minimum temperature of 4.2 degrees Celsius. Fog blanketed parts of Delhi, causing visibility to drop to less than 500 meters in several areas of North India.
The IMD predicts further temperature dips in the upcoming days across Delhi and its neighboring regions. Shallow fog is expected in the capital for the next four days.
While the capital freezes, Tamil Nadu and Kerala brace for heavy rain in the coming days. The weather department also notes a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Arabian Sea and the possibility of a cyclonic circulation or low-pressure area over the South Bay of Bengal. Additionally, a Western Disturbance is anticipated to impact the north-western Himalayan region, affecting Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi improved from ‘very poor’ to ‘poor,’ according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). However, certain areas, like Punjabi Bagh, maintained a ‘very poor’ air quality with an AQI of 333.
In the southern states, Tamil Nadu is expected to witness thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the next three days, while Kerala and Lakshadweep islands are likely to experience heavy rainfall on December 17. The IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall continuing in both states for the next two weeks.
Apart from Delhi and the southern states, a Western Disturbance is expected to impact Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh from December 16. Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation was observed over the southwest Arabian Sea, with a likelihood of another over the South Bay of Bengal.
As the nation grapples with varying weather patterns, residents are advised to stay updated on local forecasts and take necessary precautions.
