Democratic Voters Lean Toward Seeking an Alternative to Biden for 2024

A prevailing sentiment among likely Democratic voters suggests that the Democratic Party should consider nominating a candidate other than Joe Biden for the presidential election next year, as revealed by a recent poll released on Thursday.

The survey, conducted by CNN and SSRS from August 25 to August 31, uncovered that two-thirds of Democratic and Democratic-leaning registered voters expressed a preference for an alternative to Joe Biden. Among these voters, 18% specified a particular alternative candidate, while a substantial 82% simply desired a change from the current president.

Despite this inclination within the Democratic base, when assessing declared Democratic candidates, Joe Biden emerges as the frontrunner best suited to challenge the prominent Republican favorite, Donald Trump. Noteworthy contenders include Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, and self-help author Marianne Williamson, who also participated in the 2020 election.

While many experts acknowledge the strength of the U.S. economy and highlight legislative accomplishments under President Biden, such as the passage of ambitious infrastructure and domestic spending initiatives, Biden’s approval ratings continue to lag. The most recent CNN and SSRS poll shows the president’s approval rating at a mere 39%.

Furthermore, nearly 60% of respondents expressed the view that Biden’s policies have had a negative impact on economic conditions. A substantial 76% voiced concerns about Biden’s age, with many questioning his ability to serve a full term if re-elected at the age of 80.

These findings align with previous polls, including one conducted during a similar timeframe and released by the Wall Street Journal, where 73% of voters deemed Biden “too old to run for president.” In contrast, only 47% of respondents held the same view about Trump, who is merely three years younger than Biden.

Despite the reservations surrounding a second term for Joe Biden, the CNN poll identified Nikki Haley as the sole potential Republican nominee who would decisively defeat Biden in the upcoming election. Haley, a former South Carolina governor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, held a notable lead over Biden in a hypothetical general election matchup, with 49% support compared to Biden’s 43%. On the campaign trail, Haley has consistently raised concerns about Biden’s age, advocating for mental competency tests for politicians above the age of 75.

However, in current Republican polling averages, Nikki Haley ranks fourth, trailing behind entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. All these contenders lag far behind Trump, who continues to dominate the race despite facing 91 criminal charges and civil lawsuits, including a defamation case where he has been adjudicated as a rapist.

Recent legal challenges to Trump’s eligibility for the 2024 election have also emerged, with a watchdog group suing to remove him from the ballot in Colorado. The lawsuit contends that Trump’s involvement in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol disqualifies him under the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits individuals who have “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from holding office.

Ultimately, while doubts about Joe Biden’s candidacy persist among Democratic voters, the poll indicates that Biden remains a formidable contender in hypothetical matchups against major Republican candidates. The 2024 presidential election promises to be a closely watched and hotly contested race, with the political landscape evolving rapidly.
