In a surprising turn of events, Lakshman Singh, a prominent Madhya Pradesh Congress leader and brother of former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, expressed a dissenting opinion about Rahul Gandhi’s leadership at a press conference. Singh asserted that Rahul Gandhi is merely a party MP, not a significant leader, and media attention toward him should be tempered.
Singh’s remarks have ignited a political firestorm, with BJP seizing the opportunity to claim that even Congress leaders are losing confidence in Rahul Gandhi. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala pointed out that this statement raises questions about the internal dynamics within the Congress party and its reliance on family-centric leadership.
Addressing the controversy, Shehzad emphasized that public rejection in multiple elections and lack of confidence from allies and now within the party itself should prompt Congress to reconsider its leadership structure.
Singh bluntly stated, “Rahul Gandhi is just a party worker. He is just an MP. Apart from that, he is nothing. You (media) people too should not highlight Rahul Gandhi so much, nor should we. No one becomes a great leader by birth, one becomes great by his or her actions.”
Shehzad Poonawala argued, “First, the public rejected Rahul Gandhi. He lost over 40 elections and two Lok Sabha elections. Then his allies like Kejriwal and Mamata expressed no confidence in him. And now, Congress leaders are voicing the same lack of confidence in Rahul Gandhi. So, now the party should take note of it and decide how long the party would run like a family shop.”
The Congress party is yet to officially respond to these comments, but Singh clarified that his intention was not to undermine Rahul Gandhi but to highlight that everyone in the party, including Gandhi himself, is a dedicated party worker.
