New Delhi- In a display of diplomatic prowess, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to convene with an array of world leaders during the G20 Summit 2023, which marks the first-ever occurrence of this prestigious event under India’s presidency.
As the G20 Summit kicks off under the Indian Presidency, PM Modi’s diplomatic agenda includes more than 15 critical bilateral meetings with global leaders, showcasing India’s growing influence on the world stage.
On the eve of this historic summit, PM Modi announced his intention to engage with three prominent world leaders, signaling a pivotal moment for international relations. His scheduled meetings include discussions with the United States President, Joe Biden; Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina; and Mauritius Prime Minister, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.
The primary objectives of these high-level interactions are to evaluate and strengthen India’s bilateral relationships with these nations and intensify developmental cooperation on multiple fronts, as articulated by PM Modi.
Over the course of the summit, commencing on September 9 and concluding on September 10, PM Modi’s diplomatic dance card is brimming with significant engagements. On September 9, he is slated to hold bilateral discussions with UK’s Rishi Sunak, Japan’s Fumio Kishida, and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, highlighting the diverse array of nations with which India seeks to bolster its ties.
Sunday, September 10, promises yet more diplomatic dialogues for PM Modi. A working lunch with French President Emmanuel Macron and an informal pull-aside with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are on the agenda. Additional bilateral meetings are scheduled with leaders from Comoros, Turkey, South Korea, UAE, Nigeria, Brazil, the European Union, and the European Council.
This G20 Summit is significant not only due to the extensive diplomatic dialogues but also because it signifies India’s ascension to the role of G20 Presidency. Having assumed the presidency on December 1 of the preceding year, India has diligently hosted approximately 200 meetings in 60 cities across the nation, laying the groundwork for this pinnacle event.
The 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi represents the culmination of a year-long process of meetings and discussions, which included engagements with ministers, senior officials, and civil societies. Established in 1999 to ensure global financial stability, the G20 has expanded its scope to include middle-income countries, further solidifying its role in shaping international policies.
As the summit unfolds, the world watches with anticipation, recognizing that while it may not provide solutions to all global challenges, it serves as a platform for courageous and collaborative steps towards a more interconnected and prosperous world.
