In a resounding display of cricketing prowess, India delivered a crushing defeat to Sri Lanka, securing their place in the World Cup semi-finals. This unbeaten tournament host clinched victory by a colossal margin of 302 runs.

Facing an imposing target of 358, Sri Lanka’s batting lineup crumbled, ultimately succumbing at a mere 55 runs within just 20 overs. Mohammed Shami emerged as the star of the Indian bowling attack, claiming a remarkable 5-18 in a mere five overs. This stupendous performance was complemented by the early strikes from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who sent shockwaves through the Sri Lankan camp. The innings featured five ducks, and the highest individual score barely touched 14.

Sri Lanka’s opening duo experienced a nightmare start as they both departed for golden ducks, leaving their team reeling at 14-6. Bumrah, boasting impressive figures of 1-8 in five overs, and Siraj, with an equally impactful 3-16 in seven overs, set the stage for the rapid disintegration of Sri Lanka’s innings. Mohammed Shami then capitalized on the situation, securing two crucial wickets in two consecutive deliveries.

India’s victory was not just comprehensive but historic, marking their most significant World Cup triumph, surpassing their previous record of a 257-run win over non-Test nation Bermuda during the 2007 World Cup edition in the Caribbean.

While Virat Kohli narrowly missed the opportunity to match Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49 one-day international centuries, he made a formidable contribution by amassing 88 runs. India posted a formidable total of 357-8, with opening batsman Shubman Gill emerging as the top scorer with 92 runs.

Kohli and Gill, who shared an impressive partnership of 189 runs, were dismissed in relatively quick succession after the early departure of India’s captain, Rohit Sharma. However, Shreyas Iyer’s explosive innings provided the much-needed impetus, as he blazed to 82 runs from just 56 balls, including six masterfully executed sixes.
