In a significant move, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College in south Delhi has announced that out of its 3,600 students, 1,397 students are to be detained due to attendance falling below 40%. This includes 200 students who have not attended any classes at all.
The college principal emphasized the urgency for students to attend classes regularly, expressing concern about the emergence of a ‘college of correspondence,’ where attendance is merely a formality for many. Of the detained students, 1,022 will need to submit an undertaking to cover the deficit attendance in the next semester. The administration has granted them a final chance until December 12 to do so.
Arun Kumar Attree, principal of the Sheikh Sarai college, highlighted the lax attitude of students towards attending classes, urging a shift towards merit-based education. The college has decided not to issue exam admit cards to students with attendance less than 40% in a semester. Those with attendance between 40% and 66.6% will receive admit cards conditionally, provided they undertake to cover up the deficit attendance in the next semester, ensuring a combined average attendance of at least 66.6%. Failure to submit the undertaking by December 12 will result in the denial of admit cards.
The principal also criticized the lack of accountability in online admissions, noting instances where students secured admission through CUET but treated the college as a mere examination center, attending only for exams.
