In a significant parliamentary move, the Turkish legislature has decided to eliminate Coca Cola and Nestle products from the offerings within its premises. This decision was prompted by allegations of these companies’ purported support for the state of Israel amid the ongoing conflict with Hamas, as per a statement released by the parliament. This development has stirred debate and has been reported by the news agency Reuters, which cites an anonymous source who has identified the two multinational corporations in question.

The statement issued by the parliament asserts, “It has been determined that the products of entities found to be sympathetic to Israel shall no longer be available for purchase within the cafes, restaurants, and teahouses located within the parliament’s precincts.” This bold course of action was spearheaded by Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus, who chose not to explicitly name the companies at the center of this decision. Nevertheless, an undisclosed parliamentary source has corroborated that Coca-Cola’s beverages and Nestle’s instant coffee are indeed the exclusive brands that have been omitted from the parliament’s menu.

The parliament’s resolve to implement this action was in response to a groundswell of public demand, as reported. The parliamentary source conveyed, “The Office of the Parliament Speaker took heed of the collective outcry from the public and resolved to remove the products of these corporations from the offerings in cafes and restaurants within the parliament complex.” In recent days, both Coca Cola and Nestle have been spotlighted in social media posts by Turkish activists who have been rallying for a boycott of Israeli products and Western corporations perceived as endorsing Israel’s policies.

Turkey’s government has expressed vehement criticism regarding Israel’s military actions in Gaza and the Western nations’ support of Jerusalem. Israel has conducted extensive military operations in Gaza since the commencement of hostilities with Hamas over a month ago. This conflict has seen substantial casualties, with Gaza health authorities reporting a toll exceeding 10,000 Palestinian lives, including over 4,100 children. Consequently, hundreds of thousands of Turkish citizens have taken to the streets and voiced their protest against Israel’s operations in Gaza, often extending their disapproval through social media platforms.

The decision by the Turkish parliament to eliminate Coca Cola and Nestle products from its legislative campus reflects a broader sentiment of solidarity with the Palestinian cause and opposition to perceived support for Israel by multinational corporations.
