In a surprising turn of events, the exit polls for key Hindi heartland states and Telangana suggest a possible 2-2 draw between the Congress and BJP. Here are five takeaways that could shape the national political scenario:

1. Brand Modi Still Dominant: A potential BJP victory in Rajasthan and a close contest in Madhya Pradesh indicates that Prime Minister Modi’s charisma remains influential even in local elections, showcasing the enduring appeal of the “Modi ki guarantee.”

2. BJP’s Stronghold in Hindi Heartland: Despite two decades of incumbency in Madhya Pradesh, the BJP’s resurgence underscores the party’s robust core voter base and effective party machinery in the Hindi heartland, particularly in Madhya Pradesh and to a lesser extent in Rajasthan.

3. Impact of Caste Survey and Mandal 2.0: Rahul Gandhi’s call for a nationwide caste census seems to have had limited impact, with the exit polls suggesting a lukewarm response. The BJP’s Hindutva plank and the support of the Other Backwards Classes (OBC) base appear unscathed.

4. Congress’s Telangana Surge: The Congress’s revival in Telangana, following the Karnataka sweep, indicates the emergence of a different model in South India. A strong local leadership and strategic defections contributed to the party’s success, signaling a significant shift in the region.

5. Women Voters as Game-Changers:The elections highlight the pivotal role of women voters, with schemes like the ‘Ladli Behna’ influencing their choices. The higher turnout of women voters suggests the rise of a new ‘labharthee’ class, emphasizing the importance of welfare politics.

As these results unfold, it’s crucial to remember the dynamic nature of state and national elections, as demonstrated by the BJP’s previous losses in 2018 and subsequent victories in 2019. The road to 2024 appears challenging for the Congress, especially in the Hindi heartland.
