As the excitement builds for the IPL 2024 player auction at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Stadium, cricket enthusiasts brace themselves for the drama of bidding wars, record-breaking deals, and the unveiling of the next cricketing sensations. Before the gavel falls and fortunes change hands, let’s delve into the intricacies that govern this annual extravaganza.

Eligibility and Squad Composition

Players, nominated by their respective cricket boards, must meet the BCCI’s eligibility criteria. Each player sets a base price, and franchises adhere to specific squad composition rules, with a maximum limit of 25 players and restrictions on Indian and overseas players.

Climbing the Monetary Ranks

As the auctioneer’s voice resonates, players’ base prices set the stage for a thrilling ascent. Bids increase in ₹20 lakh increments until ₹1 crore, after which the stakes intensify. Bids between ₹1 crore and ₹2 crore rise by ₹25 lakh, and beyond ₹2 crore, they climb by ₹50 lakh.

The Accelerated Round

A unique process unfolds in the early sets, allowing certain players a fast-track entry into teams. Franchises strategically submit lists during a crucial pause, leading to an ‘accelerated round’ of swift and intense bidding, shaping the fate of players based on franchises’ submissions.

A Second Wind for Unsold Players

Even if a player misses out initially, hope persists. Following the accelerated round, teams with available slots and budget flexibility can submit lists, providing a platform for redemption as undiscovered talents find their rightful homes.

The Absence of the Right to Match Card

The much-debated ‘Right to Match’ card, discontinued ahead of the IPL mega auction in 2022, no longer exists. Introduced in 2018, it allowed franchises to buy an unretained cricketer for the highest bidding amount from the previous edition.

Set-Wise Auction Dynamics

Players for the IPL Auction 2024 are categorized into sets based on their forte, with sequencing alternating between capped and uncapped players. The top price bracket is capped at ₹2 crore, featuring 23 players. Subsequent price slabs include ₹1.5 crore, ₹1 crore, ₹75 lakhs, ₹50 lakhs, ₹40 lakhs, ₹30 lakhs, and ₹20 lakhs.
