KOLKATA – Renowned former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly is set to embark on a new industrial venture by initiating a state-of-the-art steel factory in Salboni, Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal. The factory’s construction is anticipated to be concluded within a span of five to six months.
Ganguly’s decision to foray into the steel industry was unveiled during his accompaniment of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her 12-day official visit to Spain and Dubai. During the visit, Ganguly disclosed that the cutting-edge facility is projected to be fully operational within approximately one year.
Speaking at the ‘Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS)’ in Madrid on September 14, Ganguly expressed his appreciation for the state’s proactive approach to business. He conveyed his gratitude to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her support, stating, “A lot of us believe that I only played the sport. But we started a small steel plant in 2007, and in five to six months, we will commence the construction of our new steel plant in Medinipore.”
Ganguly emphasized West Bengal’s historical receptiveness to business and its commitment to fostering the state’s development and empowering its youth. He underscored the efficiency of the process, regardless of his current collaboration with the Chief Minister, remarking, “I must tell you this is from practical experience, and not because I am with the Chief Minister; the entire process just took four to five months to complete.”
Reflecting upon his family’s business legacy, initiated by his grandfather approximately five decades ago, Ganguly praised the continuous support provided by the state government.
This move marks a significant shift in Ganguly’s career from the cricket field to the industrial landscape, showcasing his diverse entrepreneurial interests. The venture is poised to contribute to the industrial growth and economic development of West Bengal.
