In a historic move, France has become the first country in the world to proclaim abortion as a constitutional right. During the joint session of parliament, lawmakers approved a bill granting women the constitutional right to abortion. The bill received overwhelming support with 780 votes in favor and only 72 against. Women’s rights activists expressed joy at the approval of the bill, highlighting the significance of guaranteeing abortion rights for women across the nation.

It’s noteworthy that both houses of the French parliament, the National Assembly and the Senate, had previously worked on amending Article 34 of the French Constitution to pave the way for recognizing abortion as a legal right. This step aims to ensure women’s access to abortion rights.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal’s Response

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal expressed his views on the legislation even before the voting took place. He emphasized that the decision sends a message to all women, affirming their autonomy over their bodies and the right to make decisions about them. He reassured that women’s rights will be upheld, granting them the freedom to choose.

France’s Global Standing on Abortion Rights

In comparison to other countries, France stands out for its heightened awareness and advocacy regarding abortion rights. A survey conducted revealed that approximately 80% of the French population supported the legal recognition of abortion rights. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal’s proactive stance before the voting further underscores France’s commitment to empowering women.

France’s Parliament: A Vigilant Advocate

France’s parliament had previously demonstrated its vigilance on this matter by initiating the amendment of Article 34 in the Constitution. The amendment was crucial to legally guaranteeing women’s right to abortion, a privilege they have held since the 1974 law was enacted.

In a world where opinions on abortion rights vary, France’s resolute step sets a precedent for acknowledging and safeguarding women’s reproductive rights.
