In an unexpected turn of events, the aircraft carrying Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau encountered a technical malfunction during the G20 Summit. As a result, the Canadian delegation, originally scheduled to depart on Sunday, will remain in India until the ground engineering team successfully rectifies the issue. Airport officials provided this information to news agency ANI. Trudeau’s arrival in New Delhi for the G20 Summit was met with a warm welcome, including a reception by Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
The G20 Summit, held under India’s presidency, concluded on Sunday with significant achievements. A standout accomplishment was the consensus achieved on the New Delhi G20 Leaders Declaration. Despite varying stances on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the consensus was a remarkable achievement, largely credited to the leadership of India’s G20 Sherpa, Amitabh Kant, and the diligent efforts of Indian diplomats.
It’s worth noting that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has faced criticism in India due to his perceived non-committal stance regarding pro-Khalistan activists based in Canada.
During the G20 Summit in New Delhi, Justin Trudeau engaged in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, covering various aspects of the India-Canada relationship. Trudeau also addressed a press conference after the summit, where he touched upon several topics, including the Khalistan issue.
Regarding the Khalistan issue, Trudeau emphasized, “I think on the issue of the community, it is important to remember that the actions of the few do not represent the entire community or Canada. On the flip side, we also highlighted the importance of respecting the rule of law and we did talk about foreign interference…” He further emphasized India’s significance, stating, “India is an extraordinarily important economy in the world and an important partner to Canada.”
It’s worth noting that Canada’s administration has often cited principles such as freedom of expression and peaceful protest to defend anti-India activities within its borders.
Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s stance on these principles, stating, “Canada will always defend freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, and freedom of peaceful protest, and it is extremely important to us… At the same time, we are always there to prevent violence and to push back against hatred.”
Despite the technical glitch affecting Trudeau’s return plans, the Canadian Prime Minister’s visit during the G20 Summit provided an opportunity for constructive dialogues and discussions between the two nations.
