Patna, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar officially launched the Ganga Water Supply Scheme (GWSS) for Nawada town, marking the completion of the second phase of the project. The water treatment plant at Paura village in the district was switched on during the inauguration ceremony.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) statement highlighted that the project at Paura village in Kadirganj will provide 135 liters of treated Ganga water daily for each resident of Nawada. The first phase covering Rajgir and Gaya was successfully launched in 2022.

Notably, the total length of the pipeline installed to supply Ganga water to the three towns of the state is an impressive 190.90km. Approximately 14,000 households in Nawada will benefit from the supply of water from the Ganges, stored in the reservoir near Motnaje village in Rajgir hills.

This ambitious project, approved by the government in December 2019, aims to address the drinking water needs of the region. Nawada becomes the fourth town to receive Ganga water supply after Rajgir, Gaya, and Bodh Gaya.

Engineer-in-chief (irrigation), Rakesh Kumar, explained the water supply system, detailing the storage of water in a master underground reservoir at Paura village. The capacity of this reservoir is 36 million liters, from where water is distributed through pipes laid by the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (Buidco) facility.

The Ganga water supply scheme, executed with the vision of providing surplus water from the Ganges to water-stressed cities in south Bihar, aligns with the broader mission of “Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali.”

The scheme, approved in a special cabinet meeting in Gaya in December 2019, involves transporting water from the Ganges at Hathidah to Rajgir, Gaya, Bodh Gaya, and Nawada through 11 powerful pumps.

As part of this initiative, Ganga water will also be supplied for animals and plants in the Nature Safari and Zoo Safari at Rajgir.

The project’s successful implementation reflects a significant step towards ensuring a sustainable water supply for the residents of Nawada and neighboring towns.
