The Israeli and Palestinian territories are in turmoil as the Palestinian Islamist group, Hamas, unleashed its most significant assault on Israel in half a century. In a surprise attack on a Jewish holiday morning, hundreds have tragically lost their lives, prompting Israel to declare a state of war.

Here is the current state of affairs:

1. Israeli officials report that at least 250 Israelis have perished in Hamas attacks, with over 1,590 Israelis wounded, according to Israel’s health ministry.

2. In Gaza, Israeli strikes have resulted in at least 230 Palestinian fatalities and 1,610 wounded in response to the Hamas attack.

3. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has characterized the situation as “a long and challenging war” and urged Gazans to evacuate immediately. He vowed to reduce Hamas hideouts to “rubble” and declared the “first phase” of the counter-operation concluded. Israel remains determined to pursue the offensive “without reservation and without respite.”

4. Israel intends to cease the supply of electricity, fuel, and goods to Gaza, as stated by Netanyahu’s office on Saturday night.

5. US President Joe Biden vehemently condemned Hamas’ attacks against Israel, expressing solidarity with Israel and deeming the attacks “horrific” and an “appalling assault.”

6. Hamas militants breached Israeli territory during the early hours of Saturday, assuming control of various communities in the southern regions. Ongoing skirmishes persist in some areas.

7. Israeli authorities assert that Hamas fired thousands of rockets towards Israel, with Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif claiming 5,000 rockets launched, although an Israeli military spokesperson reports 2,500.

8. Israel declared war on Gaza following the attack, initiating retaliatory airstrikes that further strained the region’s already crumbling medical infrastructure.

9. Israeli civilians and soldiers are reportedly held hostage in Gaza, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the Israeli defense forces, though the exact number remains undisclosed.

10. In response to the crisis, Netanyahu has proposed a unity government that would unite him with Yair Lapid, leader of the opposition party Yesh Atid, during this national emergency.

11. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas conveyed to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that “injustice” toward Palestinians is a driving force behind the conflict with Israel, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA. Abbas also highlighted the political impasse and denial of Palestinians’ legitimate right to self-determination as factors contributing to the escalation.

12. The UN Security Council is set to convene on Sunday, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemning Hamas’ attack and urging diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

13. The White House revealed that discussions between the US and Israeli officials concerning Israel’s defense requirements are underway, and an announcement regarding military aid could come as early as tomorrow.

14. Egypt is actively engaged in discussions with Saudi Arabia and Jordan in an attempt to defuse the Palestinian-Israeli violence, according to the Egyptian foreign ministry.

15. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi discussed the need for international action to de-escalate the situation in Gaza and establish a genuine political horizon to end the occupation during a phone call with European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

16. Saudi Arabia, engaged in normalization talks with the US regarding relations with Israel, has called on both sides to exercise restraint.

17. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed full solidarity with Israel against what he described as a “cowardly and depraved” attack.

18. The US has no evidence to suggest Iran’s involvement in specific Hamas attacks on Israel, a senior official clarified. The official also denied any specific warning or indication of the strike from Iran.

19. A UN peacekeeping force has been deployed along the Lebanon-Israel border with the aim of maintaining stability and preventing escalation.

As the crisis continues to unfold, the international community closely monitors developments in this escalating conflict, hoping for a swift resolution to prevent further loss of life and destruction in the region.
