French authorities are in pursuit of a gang of champagne thieves following a daring high-speed motorway chase, where two heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) transporting a combined €600,000 (£523,000) worth of stolen Moët & Chandon prestige bottles sped through northern France.

The theft occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning in Reims, the Champagne region’s capital, as two trailers loaded with high-end champagne vanished. These luxury cargoes, equipped with trackers, were swiftly located by police on a local motorway later that morning.

Dramatic Pursuit Unfolds

A high-speed chase ensued, with the drivers of the 38-tonne vehicles abandoning their trucks and successfully evading capture. One of the lorry drivers even attempted to force police cars off the road as they approached. The daring escape involved leaping from the moving lorries onto the hard shoulder. In a coordinated maneuver, a BMW acting as a backup for the gang sped in, picked up one of the drivers, and escaped, eluding the pursuing police.

Despite these evasive actions, law enforcement managed to intervene. One officer, displaying remarkable agility, sprinted after a still-moving lorry, leaped onboard, and brought it to a halt at 10 mph (15 kmph), preventing further escape.

The second lorry was later discovered abandoned near a DIY store after its driver fled. Fortunately, the entire load of champagne was recovered as the criminals escaped empty-handed.

Investigation and Ongoing Manhunt

Authorities are meticulously examining the lorries for potential DNA evidence as they pursue an organized gang suspected of having insider information about the transported goods and connections for reselling the stolen champagne.

As the investigation unfolds, questions surrounding the sophistication and planning of this heist continue to emerge. French police remain committed to solving this audacious crime and bringing the culprits to justice.
