Gunmen kill 6 barbers in former stronghold of Pakistani Taliban

In a shocking incident in Mir Ali, a town in Pakistan’s northwest, six barbers were ruthlessly shot and killed by unidentified gunmen before dawn on Tuesday. The victims, all employed at various barbershops, fell prey to the assailants in a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the Afghanistan border.

Local police chief Jamal Khan confirmed the grim incident, highlighting the absence of immediate claims of responsibility for the brutal killings. The community expressed shock and grief, with residents recounting interactions with the victims who were simply pursuing their livelihoods. Javed Ali, a local resident, shared that he had met one of the slain men just last month during a routine visit to a barbershop.

Mir Ali, once a base for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), witnessed a military operation that successfully cleared the area of insurgents. While the TTP is a distinct entity, it remains a close ally of the Afghan Taliban, who seized control of Afghanistan in August 2021 amid the final stages of the U.S. and NATO troop withdrawal after two decades of conflict.

The historical ban on beard trimming and Western-style haircuts imposed by Pakistani militants added a layer of complexity to the region’s cultural dynamics. In recent years, Pakistan has grappled with numerous militant attacks, particularly in areas where authorities actively target TTP hideouts to thwart any attempts at resurgence by the group.

The brutal attack on the barbers in Mir Ali underscores the persistent challenges faced by the region, prompting renewed concerns about security and the efforts required to maintain stability in the aftermath of militant activities.
