Israeli Prime Minister Rejects Ceasefire, Calls for War Amid Hostage Joy

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has unequivocally rejected the idea of a ceasefire in Gaza, declaring, “This is a moment for war.” His resolute stance comes as Israel celebrates the successful rescue of one hostage, emphasizing the efficacy of its military operations in both liberating Israeli captives and inflicting heavy losses upon Hamas.

Netanyahu extended his congratulations to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency for the release of Ori Megidish, an army private. Megidish, who had been held captive for three weeks alongside more than 220 others, regained her freedom as Israel escalated its ground offensive in Gaza. Her return to her family brought a rare moment of joy for the Israeli populace.

Netanyahu expounded on the notion that Israel’s advancing forces in Gaza create unique opportunities to secure the release of hostages. He asserted that Hamas would only entertain the prospect of negotiation under duress, elaborating during a news conference, “This exerts pressure. We are fully committed to repatriating all hostages through this method.”

The prime minister dismissed calls for a ceasefire, characterizing such requests as tantamount to surrendering to terrorism and barbarism. “That shall not transpire,” Netanyahu declared, referencing the Bible’s assertion that there is a time for both peace and conflict. He underscored that the present circumstances warrant a resolute approach, branding Hamas militants as “monstrous” and emphasizing Israel’s commitment to pursuing them.

The successful rescue of Ori Megidish bolsters the Israeli government’s argument that it can effectively wage war while simultaneously securing the release of hostages. However, it’s worth noting that many relatives of the hostages appear to favor considering Hamas’s offer to exchange them for around 5,000 Palestinian prisoners, including Islamist militants incarcerated in Israeli penitentiaries.

It’s important to mention that the Israeli government has, thus far, rebuffed this offer. Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer conveyed that if a proposal to release the hostages emerges, the government might contemplate a “temporary pause” in hostilities to ensure their secure extraction.

In a bid to exert pressure, Hamas’s military wing escalated its efforts by releasing a video featuring three hostages – Danielle Aloni, Rimon Kirsht, and Elena Trupanov. These individuals were abducted on October 7, during a Hamas offensive that resulted in the deaths of more than 1,400 individuals in southern Israel.

The video’s accompanying description read: “A number of Zionist prisoners held by al-Qassam send a message to Netanyahu and the Zionist government.” It is reasonable to surmise that these three women appeared in the video under duress, considering the prohibition of hostage-taking under the Geneva Conventions.

The 76-second clip portrayed these women seated together in plastic chairs before a tiled wall, facing the camera, and appearing without any visible signs of injury. Among them, Danielle Aloni, positioned at the center, was the sole spokesperson. She gazed directly into the camera and revealed that they had been in captivity for 23 days, indicating that the video was recorded on Sunday or Monday. This transpired as the death toll in Gaza due to Israel’s bombardment surpassed 8,000, as per the Hamas-run health ministry.

Directly addressing Netanyahu, Aloni criticized his administration for leaving her community exposed during the Hamas offensive. She articulated, “We are bearing the consequences of your political and national negligence. No one came to our aid, and our pleas fell on deaf ears.”

Aloni further highlighted the supposed ceasefire agreement, emphasizing, “We are innocent citizens, taxpayers to the state of Israel. Your actions seem aimed at our annihilation through the IDF.” She implored for a prisoner exchange, vehemently insisting, “Release their citizens, release their prisoners, release us all. Reunite us with our families immediately!” The video concluded with her fervent screams of “now,” while Trupanov and Kirsht remained largely silent and averted their gaze from the camera.

Prime Minister Netanyahu denounced the video as “cruel psychological propaganda” and extended a message of solidarity to the captive women, stating, “Our hearts go out to you and all the other hostages.”

Aloni had been abducted from the Nir Oz kibbutz, accompanied by her six-year-old daughter, Emilia, as well as her twin sister Sharon Aloni Konio and her family.

At a press conference held in Tel Aviv, Remus Aloni, Aloni’s father, emotionally conveyed his reaction to seeing his daughter on television, sharing, “My heart nearly stopped beating.” He implored the Red Cross to visit the hostages and requested Qatar, which has played a mediating role with Hamas, to assist in their repatriation. He added, “To Danielle and Sharon – girls, we see you. We love you. We hear you. You are in our thoughts every minute, every second.”

Kirsht’s mother expressed her concern about her daughter’s absence of glasses, emphasizing, “She needs her glasses to see anything.” She appealed to Netanyahu to exhaust all possible means to secure the hostages’ release.

In a parallel development, family members assembled in Jerusalem for an “empty beds” installation, symbolically representing the estimated number of hostages through 239 beds and bassinets. Yael Moshe, who held a placard featuring her mother, Adina Moshe, one of the abductees, expressed her concern and worry, saying, “My stomach hurts. I don’t want to think about it.”

Moshe advocated for the release of Palestinian prisoners to ensure the hostages’ safe return, emphasizing the willingness to take any necessary actions. Eyal Mor, a relative of other hostages, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that once the hostages are repatriated, Israel could then take necessary actions against Hamas. “Let’s secure their release, and afterward, we can seek retribution for the massacre,” Mor stated.
