In a horrifying incident at an aged-care facility in New South Wales, a 34-year-old man has been charged with the alleged rape of a 90-year-old woman, leaving the elderly victim with serious injuries. The traumatic event occurred on the Central Coast, prompting swift action by the police.

The accused reportedly broke into the Bateau Bay aged-care home around 12:40 am last Wednesday, carrying out what authorities described as a “horrendous” sexual assault. The victim, severely traumatized by the attack, received medical treatment for her injuries.

Police arrested the 34-year-old suspect at a residence in Caves Beach, near Lake Macquarie, on Monday evening. He was subsequently charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated sexual assault. Attempting to evade arrest, the man allegedly ran out the back door of the property, jumping a fence before being apprehended. He was taken to the hospital for minor injuries to his arm.

The accused was denied bail and is set to appear at Belmont local court on Tuesday to face the charges.

Sex Crimes Squad Commander Jayne Doherty expressed shock at the incident, stating, “It’s horrendous that someone, any person in the safety of their home would be attacked like this, but to [allegedly] attack a very defenseless old lady is beyond belief.” Doherty suggested that the assault seemed to be an opportunistic attack, emphasizing the absence of a discernible connection between the suspect, the aged-care facility, and the victim before the offense.

The victim, currently under the care of family and medical staff, is recovering from severe wounds to her arms. Describing the extent of the injuries, Doherty noted the elderly woman’s torn skin due to applied pressure.

Detectives conducted a raid at an address in The Entrance on Friday night before the suspect’s arrest. During the search, police allegedly discovered electronics, sim cards, and clothing relevant to their investigation. These items were seized for forensic examination.

The 34-year-old faces charges including aggravated break and enter, inflicting actual bodily harm with the intent of sexual intercourse, aggravated sexual assault (break and enter), and aggravated sexual assault (inflict actual bodily harm on the victim).

To enhance security at the nursing home, extra measures have been implemented to ensure residents’ safety. Authorities assured the public that there are no ongoing safety concerns.
