In a heightened escalation of tensions in the South China Sea, Chinese and Philippine vessels engaged in multiple clashes over the weekend. The Philippines’ sea task force reported damage to its vessels, alleging they were “directly targeted” by a Chinese coast guard ship using a water cannon during a supply mission to Second Thomas Shoal. A Filipino boat was also reportedly rammed by a Chinese vessel.
China’s Coast Guard countered, stating that the Philippine boat ignored warnings and “deliberately collided” with its vessel, which was on a normal law enforcement mission. The responsibility, according to the Coast Guard, lies entirely with the Philippines.
Tensions over maritime territory in the South China Sea have been escalating, with China asserting sweeping claims in the region. The Philippines, under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has been vocal about Beijing’s tactics in disputed waters. The incident follows a recent report of the Chinese Coast Guard firing water cannons at Filipino civilian ships near Scarborough Shoal, drawing condemnation from the United States.
The international community watches closely as these tensions unfold in one of the world’s most critical waterways.
