In a bold and groundbreaking move, Google has declared its unwavering commitment to protect users of generative artificial intelligence systems integrated into its Google Cloud and Workspace platforms when faced with allegations of intellectual property infringements. This initiative aligns Google with the ranks of other tech giants, such as Microsoft and Adobe, who have likewise pledged to defend their users in similar contexts.

Distinguished technology titans like Google have been fervently investing in generative AI, racing to incorporate this transformative technology into their array of products. Notably, renowned authors, illustrators, and other copyright holders have initiated several legal actions, contending that both the utilization of their creations to train AI systems and the content generated by these systems encroach upon their intellectual property rights.

Google’s spokesperson expressed that, to their knowledge, the company is at the forefront of the industry in offering a comprehensive two-pronged approach to indemnify users, specifically addressing both varieties of claims. Google’s new policy extends its protective umbrella over software, encompassing the Vertex AI development platform and the Duet AI system, responsible for generating textual and visual content within the realms of Google Workspace and Cloud applications. Notably, the press release made no mention of Bard, Google’s more prominent generative AI chatbot program.

It is imperative to note that this indemnity does not extend to situations where users intentionally engage in the generation of content aimed at infringing upon the rights of others.

These latest litigations revolving around generative AI primarily target the corporate entities responsible for these systems, including Google, rather than individual end-users. AI proponents have posited that the application of training data scraped from the internet in the development of their AI systems qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law.

As the realm of generative AI continues to evolve, Google’s steadfast commitment to defending its users against copyright allegations marks a significant stride in shaping the future of AI technology.
