NEW DELHI: The Central government has unveiled a ‘tentative list’ of the parliamentary agenda for the upcoming special session of Parliament, scheduled from September 18 to 22. The agenda includes two bills, namely The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023, which are set to be taken up in the Lok Sabha. These bills had already been passed in the Rajya Sabha on August 3.
On the other hand, members of the Rajya Sabha are expected to deliberate on The Post Office Bill, 2023, and The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023. These two bills were introduced in the Rajya Sabha on August 10.
Despite speculations regarding the government’s proposal of a ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill, no mention of it was found in the tentative list released by the Central government.
In anticipation of the special session, there were also rumors about the government introducing a resolution to rename India as Bharat.
In addition to the formal parliamentary business, there will be a discussion on the topic ‘Parliamentary Journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – Achievements, Experiences, Memories, and Learnings,” as indicated by the government’s notice.
A day before the commencement of the special session of Parliament, the government has called for an all-party meeting scheduled for September 17.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi confirmed that invitations had been sent via email to leaders of opposition parties to attend the meeting.
It is noteworthy that the special session of Parliament, spanning from September 18 to 22, was announced by Pralhad Joshi on August 31. At the time, the agenda was kept confidential, which led to speculation and criticism from the Opposition.
According to officials, the session will commence in the old Parliament building and will shift to the new structure the following day. The shift to the new Parliament building will coincide with Ganesh Chaturthi on September 19, a date considered auspicious for new beginnings.
