NEW DELHI: Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth expressed strong criticism of the Indian Test team, denouncing them as an overrated side in the longest format. Srikkanth highlighted the team’s recent below-par performance and suggested that deserving players have been sidelined.
The current series against South Africa has been a challenging one for India, facing an innings defeat in Centurion. As the second Test in Cape Town approaches, Srikkanth commented on the team’s performance during Virat Kohli’s captaincy, stating, “Test cricket, we are overrated. I think it was a phase of 2-3 years where we were outstanding when Virat Kohli was the captain of the team. We dominated in England, we fought hard in South Africa, we won in Australia.”
However, he added that the team has been relying on past achievements and has not performed at the same level since then. Srikkanth emphasized the need to reconsider the ICC rankings, claiming that numerous players in the Indian team are overrated, while quality players are left out.
“In T20 cricket India are highly overrated. ODI cricket, we are a fantastic team. What happens in ODIs, in the semi-finals, finals, it’s just a one-off match. It’s a luck factor, a lot depends on luck in these matches,” Srikkanth said, sharing his views on the team’s performance in different formats.
The timing of Srikkanth’s comments adds an interesting dimension as Team India is engaged in the ongoing Test series, and the evaluation of the team’s capabilities and strategies continues to be a topic of extensive debate.
