In a remarkable turn of events, Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, has ignited a significant controversy within the state assembly through his candid remarks regarding population control. The comments, delivered with graphic detail, have sparked a considerable debate, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) labeling them as “vulgar.” Kumar made these unconventional remarks while emphasizing the pivotal role of girls’ education in curtailing population growth.
While these comments garnered smiles, including from Nitish Kumar’s deputy, Tejashwi Yadav, they also left several women MLAs from the BJP visibly perturbed.
“The realm of Indian politics has seldom witnessed a leader as candid as Nitish Kumar. It appears that Nitish Babu has succumbed to an inclination towards ‘adult, B-grade cinema’ vocabulary. There is a compelling case for censoring his double entendre-laden statements. It seems he may have been influenced by his company,” remarked the Bihar BJP in a statement on X.
Nitish Kumar’s comments came in the wake of the state’s release of a comprehensive report on the contentious caste survey, which delves into the economic conditions of various sections of society.
In a recorded video, the Bihar Chief Minister articulated that the fertility rate, previously standing at 4.3 percent, had now declined to 2.9 percent as per last year’s report.
Kumar’s unconventional remarks on population control raised objections from female BJP legislators.
“The Chief Minister, despite being over 70 years of age, has chosen to make comments that are utterly nonsensical. He employed terminology that is unsuitable for public discourse. We intend to voice our protest against this,” declared BJP MLA Gayatri Devi.
While underscoring the significance of population control, a female Congress MLA acknowledged that the Chief Minister could have exercised restraint in his choice of words. “Certain subjects are considered off-limits in our society, especially within public forums,” noted Pratima Das.
Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, however, extended his support to the Chief Minister, asserting that Kumar was addressing the subject of sex education, a topic typically covered in the realm of biology. “He was discussing a subject found within the purview of biology,” Yadav stated.
