In the midst of diplomatic tensions between India and the Maldives, Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that the government is examining derogatory remarks made by some Maldives ministers against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in response to his recent visit to Lakshadweep.

As of now, Scindia clarified that the government has not directed airlines to take any specific actions. This development follows the suspension of three deputy ministers by the Maldives government on January 7 for their derogatory social media posts against Prime Minister Modi.

The three deputy ministers, Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid from the youth ministry, criticized Modi’s post on ‘X,’ interpreting it as an attempt to promote Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives.

In response, the Indian high commission in Male strongly raised the matter with the Maldivian foreign ministry on January 7. The Maldivian foreign ministry issued a statement, clarifying that such derogatory remarks on social media platforms are personal opinions and do not represent the government’s official stance.

The situation has garnered attention in India, with celebrities urging people to explore domestic tourist destinations instead of the Maldives. Social media posts have also indicated cancellations of scheduled trips to the Maldives by some Indians due to the ongoing row.
