CHENNAI:In the wake of Cyclone Michaung’s impact on coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, Chennai airport is set to remain closed until 11.30 pm on Monday. Strong winds and heavy rains have led to disruptions in operations, with around 10 flights cancelled and 20 flights delayed earlier in the day.

Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport. Despite the closure of the airport, operations continue, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

The heavy rainfall has resulted in severe waterlogging across Chennai, causing the closure of at least 14 subways. Suburban train services have been temporarily suspended, and disruptions in electricity and internet services have been reported. Power has been preemptively suspended as a precautionary measure, according to Tangedco officials.

The Directorate of Public Health has issued an advisory, urging people to drink boiled water during this period of disruption. Dr. T S Selva Vinayagam, the Director of Public Health, emphasized the importance of boiling water to inactivate pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall in specific districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur. Coastal districts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are also on high alert as Cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall on the south coast of Andhra on Tuesday.

As the situation unfolds, residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions. The impact of Cyclone Michaung is evident not only in transportation disruptions but also in various aspects of daily life, emphasizing the need for preparedness in the face of natural calamities.
