In Bihar, the agricultural landscape is marked by a notable imbalance in irrigation access. As it stands, only 47% of farmlands benefit from large and medium irrigation projects, leaving approximately 53% of areas devoid of essential water resources.

“State’s Ambitious Goal: Development of Irrigation Facilities Across 53 Lakh 53 Thousand Hectares”

Bihar’s vision for agricultural prosperity centers on the ambitious target of developing irrigation facilities across 53 lakh 53 thousand hectares. The initial milestone, set for March 2023, aimed at achieving irrigation in 37 lakh 38 thousand 240 hectares.

“Kharif Season 2023-24: Progress and Aspirations”

During the Kharif season of 2023-24, the Department of Water Resources set its sights on providing irrigation facilities to an extensive 22 lakh hectares. The progress report indicates that nearly 19 lakh 85 thousand 22 hectares have received irrigation benefits. As Bihar looks ahead, there is anticipation of enhancing irrigation capacity for the upcoming Rabi season, potentially benefiting approximately 8.5 lakh hectares.

“Geographical Spread: Irrigation Reaches 31 Districts”

The success of Bihar’s irrigation initiatives is evident in the coverage of approximately 31 districts. Key canal systems such as Sone, North Koel, Kosi, and Gandak contribute significantly, ensuring water availability for agriculture. The inclusion of major reservoirs and lift irrigation projects adds depth to the comprehensive approach adopted by the state.
