DEHRADUN, In a remarkable feat of engineering and perseverance, Indian workers trapped in the collapsed Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarakhand for 17 days were safely rescued, marking one of the most significant operations in recent years.

The 41 workers, greeted with wild cheers and flower garlands, emerged from the 187-foot steel pipe that served as their lifeline during the rescue operation. The rescue effort faced multiple challenges, including falling debris and the breakdown of drilling machines in the challenging Himalayan terrain.

Minister of Road Transport Nitin Gadkari expressed relief and happiness over the successful rescue, highlighting the well-coordinated efforts of multiple agencies. Families, who endured the anxious wait, celebrated as their loved ones emerged, embracing them with tears of joy.

Crowds outside the tunnel cheered, shouting, “Hail mother India!” as news of the successful rescue spread. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the workers’ courage and patience, stating that their inspirational journey had won against challenging odds.

Uttarakhand state chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami commended the prayers of millions and the tireless work of rescue teams. The rescued workers were immediately assessed by a medical team, and their health was reported as fine.

Relatives, who had camped outside the tunnel, expressed gratitude to both God and rescuers. Musarrat Jahan, wife of one rescued worker, said, “Not only my husband got a new life, we also got a new life. We will never forget it.”

The final section of the rescue involved a hand-dug “rat-hole” technique by military engineers and skilled miners. Anand Mahindra, an Indian billionaire, paid tribute to the individual effort and sacrifice of the workers, emphasizing the human element in the face of adversity.

The workers, who endured the ordeal with courage and patience, became heroes, with celebrations echoing through their hometowns. The successful rescue marked a beacon of hope amid challenging circumstances and demonstrated the triumph of collective efforts and determination.
